When the temperature begins to drop, consider these maintenance and end-of-season tasks that will help you winterize your home and protect your property for the fall and winter.

1. Remove all garden hoses that are attached to the house, drain them and store them away. Shut off the valves and insulate the hose bibb (outdoor spigot) and check for leaks.
2. Schedule your heating system annual maintenance. Clear any buildup and growth around the outdoor unit to keep it running efficiently.
3. Ensure your chimney, fireplace, and flue are serviced (if applicable).
4. You should change your smoke and carbon monoxide batteries every six months. Additionally, you should check for the unit’s expiration date because they do expire! Keep in mind that residential fires are more common in winter.
5. Check your fan blades. As the weather cools down, use the switch on your ceiling fan to change the direction of the blade rotation. You’ll want to create an updraft for the winter. And while you’re at it, wipe the dust off the blades.
